East Lycian Way program

The Asia Outdoor Club invites you to hike the famous Lycian Way with our professional guides, many of whom have extensive hiking and climbing experience, including seven-thousanders such as Lenin, Khan Tengri, Communism, Korzhenevskaya and Pobeda peaks. They will share their experiences and stories of adventures in various mountain regions with you.

The Lycian Way is a popular hiking route along the coast of Turkey, approximately 540 km long. The trail passes through ancient Lycia, a region known for its rich history, mountainous landscapes and picturesque sea views. The path runs from Fethiye in the west to Antalya in the east, connecting mountain trails, coastal areas and ancient ruins, including tombs, amphitheaters and fortresses.

The eastern part of the Lycian Way has more challenging terrain and steep climbs, but it is here that you will find breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and picturesque bays. This section also has more historical monuments, including the ancient cities of Olympos, Phaselis and Myra, with remains of ancient Greek and Roman architecture. The eastern part requires good physical fitness, especially due to the abundance of rocky paths, but rewards travelers with the beauty of untouched nature and unique archaeological sites.

Day 1Antalya - Cirali (95 km., 2-3 hrs.)

Arrival in Antalya. The group will gather at a pre-arranged location, which will be discussed before arrival. After the meeting, we will travel about 2-3 hours by bus to the village of Cirali, our first stop.

Cirali is a small village on the coast of Turkey, not far from Antalya, known for its quiet beaches and natural beauty. The place is famous for its clean sea, secluded atmosphere and a guarded beach where Caretta caretta sea turtles lay their eggs. Nearby are the ancient ruins of the city of Olympos and the famous natural phenomenon – the burning rock Chimera, where gases coming out of the ground constantly burn. Cirali is ideal for lovers of a quiet holiday in nature and walks among historical sights.

We will stay for three days in a campsite with a shower, toilet, electricity and Wi-Fi. The sea is nearby, the beach is sandy and pebble and uncrowded. This is where our route “Lycian Way” program begins.

Day 2Cirali - Tekirova - Cirali (20 km.)

Today we will go on a hike along the Lycian Way along the coast to the village of Tekirova. Along the way we will make stops at secluded beaches for rest and swimming. You can go the entire route, or only part of the way, or stay in Cirali.

There will be pine trees and fresh sea air. In May the water in the sea already warms up to 20-21 °C, and in the summer it becomes even warmer. Even in winter the water temperature remains comfortable. On one of the beaches we will have a small lunch-snack.

After a long day we will return to the camp with a feeling of pleasant fatigue. In the evening we will go to a local restaurant for dinner, so as not to waste energy on cooking and celebrate a successful first day of the hike.

Day 3Excursions to Olympos and Chimera (7 km.)

Today we will have an excursion to the ancient city of Olympos, founded, according to legend, by pirates. Pine forests hid it from prying eyes, and a secluded bay served as a refuge for pirate ships. Over time, Olympos became part of various states, and now you can see monuments of different cultures here. Among the pines are the ruins of temples, theaters, castles and Lycian tombs. You can also collect bay leaves.

The excursion will take almost the whole day, as Olympos really has a lot of interesting things.

Olympos is an ancient city in Turkey, surrounded by pine forests and famous ruins of temples, theaters and Lycian tombs. According to legend, it was founded by pirates who used the bay as a refuge.

For lunch, we will stop by one of the local restaurants to try fresh fish, Turkish dishes and fruits.

In the evening, we will visit Chimera, where tongues of fire come out of the ground, which have been burning for hundreds of years. An ancient legend explains it as fire belching from a monster defeated here. We will watch the Chimera at sunset – it is beautiful at any time of day.

We return to the campsite.

Day 4Cirali - Adrasan (18 km.)

The Çıralı to Adrasan Lycian Way trek is a scenic route known for its natural beauty and breathtaking views. The trail starts in a dense pine forest, where hikers are greeted by the scent of pine and cedar trees, and gradually ascends to Mount Moses. The climb up the mountain is quite steep and requires physical fitness, but the view from the top is stunning, with views of the Mediterranean coast, mountain peaks and bays.

Moses is not only a scenic spot, but also a key part of the route. At the top, hikers can stop and rest, enjoying the views of the sea and surrounding valleys. The Lycian Way in this area is famous for its rare plants and wildlife, as well as the almost complete absence of tourists, allowing for solitude and silence. The landscape here changes from dense forest to open rocky areas, adding variety to the route.

The descent from the mountain leads to the coastal village of Adrasan, surrounded by green hills and tranquil bays. Here the path becomes easier, and by evening travelers reach Adrasan, a cozy village famous for its beach and leisurely atmosphere. Local cafes and restaurants offer the opportunity to relax after a busy day and enjoy Turkish cuisine in a cozy setting by the sea.

Overnight at the Adrasan campsite, where there are all the necessary amenities – toilet, shower, electricity and wireless internet.

Day 5Adrasan - Sazak Bay (20 km.)

After breakfast, we begin our journey to Sazak Bay. From Adrasan, the trail leads along the coast, offering incredible views of the clear Mediterranean Sea and rocky bays. We will pass through secluded beaches where you can stop for a swim, enjoying the warm water and silence, away from the bustle of tourist places. In this place, you will feel complete unity with nature, enjoying every step among the green pine forests and mountain slopes.

The Lycian Way continues through picturesque hills and cliffs until we reach our final point – Sazak Bay. This is one of the most secluded and beautiful places on the coast, where white beaches and crystal clear water await you. Here you can relax, enjoy swimming or just rest in this natural paradise, recharging your strength before the next days of travel.

This day is the perfect way to discover the beauty of the Eastern Lycian Way, combining physical activity, amazing landscapes and a complete sense of peace on secluded beaches, away from the tourist bustle.

Day 6Sazak Bay - Casanova Bay (15 km.)

Today is the hardest day of the program, which will require endurance and patience. We will overcome three mountain passes with a serious gain in altitude, which will make the path quite difficult. However, these efforts will be rewarded with breathtaking views and unique historical monuments.

The Lycian Way runs along rocky areas with scree slopes and thorny vegetation. The first significant object on our way will be the Gelidonya lighthouse, located on high cliffs and built in 1936. This old lighthouse has long served as a landmark for sailors. From its top, there is a stunning panoramic view of the coast and the sea, and we will definitely make a stop to admire this magnificence.

The efforts will pay off when we reach Casanova Bay – a secluded place with crystal clear water and a sandy beach. Here you can relax and swim. The campsite has all the necessary amenities, as in the previous places.

This day will be a real challenge, but it will bring you unforgettable impressions: magnificent mountain landscapes, historic lighthouses and beautiful bays.

Day 7Transfer to Kumluca. Trekking to Demre (5 km.)

After a morning rest, in the afternoon we set off for Demre. On the way we pass through Kumluca, famous for its greenhouses where vegetables and fruits are grown all year round. The Lycian Way continues further and we walk to Demre.

In Demre we will stay at a campsite by the sea, where there are all the amenities: electricity, shower and toilet. Not far away is a wide beach with white sand, and the rest of the day can be devoted to relaxing on it.

Day 8Demre. Tour of the ancient city of Myra (20 km.)

Today we will go on a fascinating tour of Demre and the ancient city of Myra, where we will immerse ourselves in the history and culture of Lycia. Demre, located on the coast, is famous not only for its picturesque location, but also as the birthplace of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, who later became known in Europe as Santa Claus. In Demre, you will be able to see the Church of St. Nicholas, where his relics still rest, and admire ancient frescoes depicting scenes from the life of the saint.

After visiting Demre, we will head to the ancient city of Myra, which was one of the most important centers of Lycia. Myra is famous for its majestic tombs carved directly into the rocks, and the remains of an ancient theater that could accommodate several thousand spectators. These impressive structures have survived to this day and allow us to imagine what the cities of Lycia looked like in ancient times.

Tombs resembling the facades of houses are carved into the rocks and give a unique insight into the culture and architecture of that time. One of the most striking objects is the Theater of Myra, which, despite its antiquity, retains excellent acoustics and is used for various cultural events. A walk through these ancient ruins immerses you in the atmosphere of historical grandeur and gives you the opportunity to see how this ancient city lived.

During the tour, we will also talk about the importance of the city of Myra in the trade and culture of Lycia, its connections with the Roman Empire, as well as the role of St. Nicholas in history. An important element of the tour will be a visit to ancient temples and other monuments that have preserved traces of ancient civilizations. Each place is filled with history, and the guide will help to reveal all its secrets.

After a rich tour of Demre and Myra, we will return to the camp to rest and enjoy the evening time on the coast. The whole day will be devoted not only to the exploration of historical monuments, but also to a deep immersion in the culture and traditions of the ancient peoples who left their mark on these places.

Day 9Demre - Antalya. Flight home

Today we leave for Antalya. The bus ride takes about 2.5-3 hours. After arrival, you can either go to your evening flight or stay in the city for some time.

The route then passes through Chimera, a place where flames burst out from under the ground, arising from a natural gas emission that has been burning for many centuries. Weather

In January, the weather is unstable: clear sunny days alternate with rainy ones. However, there are only a third of rainy days in this month. Snow is not expected at this time of year, and the air temperature during the day is around +16°C, and at night it does not fall below +5°C. In January, there are often winds from the sea, sometimes accompanied by storms up to 1-2 points. The water temperature at this time is even higher than the air temperature: in December it reaches +20°C, and in January it is around +18°C. This time is ideal for leisurely walks, when the air is filled with the aromas of citrus and fresh sea.

From February to April, the weather is mostly sunny, but there are still rains – and they quickly stop. In February, the daytime temperature is still around +16°C, and at night it is already around +11°C. It gets warmer with each month, and by April the daytime temperature can reach +22°C, and if you are lucky – up to +28°C. Night temperatures also become more comfortable, around +16°C. The sea warms up slowly: throughout the spring, the water temperature remains almost unchanged and stays at +18°C.

The beach season begins in May! The weather resembles summer: during the day, the temperature reaches +25°C–+30°C in the shade, and at night it does not fall below +15°C. Rain is rare, although you should still be prepared for it. The water temperature in the sea begins to rise and by the May holidays it is around +20°C. In general, May brings hot weather during the day, and the evenings remain cool.
